Air travel into the Murcia region will soon be even more convenient with a new internatonal airport a short distance from Murcia city to be built by 2009.
The new international Murcia airport at Corvera (20km south of Murcia city) will soon be a reality following the final go-ahead from the Ministry of Development. The actual work now passes into the hands of the regional government in Murcia and their president, Luis Ramon Valcarcel has announced that the project will be implemented without further delay. The enormous increase in tourism and development in Murcia means that an estimated 200,000 passengers will fly into the new airport in its first operatonal year, rising to 1.5 million after four years. Initial construction, due to begin in 2007, will provide employment for around 675 people and involve and investment of €140 million. The project is due for completion in 2009.
